WEL strongly supports the Human Rights Law Centre campaign for an Australian Human Rights Act.

WEL marked the passing of International Women's Day this year by joining with other organisations supporting calls for a Human Rights Act for NSW, and calling on the NSW Premier and Parliament to establish an inquiry to a Human Rights Act.

NSW has fallen significantly behind comparable jurisdictions when it comes to legally protecting fundamental rights.  Victoria, the Australian Capital Territory and Queensland have enacted Human Rights Acts.

Along with many of our allied organisations WEL was proud to sign off on this International Women’s Day letter to the NSW Premier.

WEL is delighted that  in response to this campaign, on 19 March 2026 the NSW Parliament  finally established an inquiry into a Human Rights Act!

We congratulate the campaign coalition and particularly acknowledge the feminist leadership of Kerry Weste, Chair of the Human Rights Act Alliance and Vice President at Australian Lawyers for Human Rights.

The NSW Parliament's Community Services Committee will inquire into the NSW Human Rights Bill 2025. This is an important development for the people of NSW. Next, begins the work of ensuring that everyone in the community - regardless of their background, identity or location - can participate in this vital consultation process about their human rights.
