With sadness, WEL acknowledges the passing of Ann Symonds, past politician and dear friend, who accomplished much in her life - a true trailblazer in social and political leadership.

Elizabeth Ann Symonds AM (née Burley; 12 July 1939 – 15 November 2018) was an Australian politician, a Labor member of the New South Wales Legislative Council from 1982 to 1998. She was a teacher educated at Armidale Teachers’ College and UNSW. She was an Alderman on Waverley Council from 1974-1977. Elected to the Upper House of NSW Parliament in 1982, she was an MLC from 1982 to 1998. Ann was admitted as a Member of the Order of Australia for significant service to for significant service to social justice, particularly through drug law reform, and to the Parliament of New South Wales.
