Over fifty years ago, on February 27, 1972, the Women’s Electoral Lobby was formed in a Carlton lounge room in Melbourne. This meeting led to WEL’s first survey of candidates for the federal election to provide guidance to voters. Now Australia’s longest running feminist lobby group, WEL is ready for Australian women’s biggest election challenge in living memory.

There has been a lot of progress in achieving gender equality since those early days. A lot more needs to be done. The WEL Policy Platform lays out clear actions that any incoming government must take to deliver real equality for women, covering ten key areas. In an atmosphere of global backlash against diversity, equity and inclusion, we are here to remind Australian politicians that these gains not only need defending but also strengthening if we are to achieve genuine gender equality and social justice for women.
