Women’s refuges save lives. We request that the Prime Minister act swiftly to agree to a long-term secure separate national funding program for women’s refuges to ensure women and children escaping family and domestic violence have a safe haven and access to specialist services to enable them to rebuild their lives.

    With 68 women killed by men this year it’s clear that we need a comprehensive and long term approach to providing better crisis accommodation and shelters for women seeking refuge.

    I have worked in the homelessness sector and specialist homelessness sector for many years at the coalface. The increase in the amount of women that are living on the street is visible to all who care to see .. and alarming. The right to shelter, for all, is a basic human need and I would argue right.

    So far, 69 dead women this year. Is it a coincidence that deaths by DV have increased to this terrible level at the same time funding has been stripped from traditional DV services? I think not. Governments on trainer wheels have given money to services on trainer wheels and women are dying as a result. PLEASE fix this!!
