Women’s refuges save lives - spread the word!

Women’s refuges save lives. We request that the Prime Minister act swiftly to agree to a long-term secure separate national funding program for women’s refuges to ensure women and children escaping family and domestic violence have a safe haven and access to specialist services to enable them to rebuild their lives.

I live in Kempsey and our refuge has been converted to a generalist homelessness service run by the Samaritans who have no experience in domestic violence and DV. We have a large Aboriginal population and the women won’t use the service. We have heard a lot of stories which are difficult to confirm as we hear nothing. Eventhough it is supposed to be for women and children there have been rumours of men being given accommodation. Staff come from Taree, over an hour away, outreach services are virtually no existent. The Going Home Staying Home reforms are a total disaster. there is a group for women who are looking to establish a community run refuge, many of us were around 40 years ago when we did it the first time. It beggars belief that, while tragic, and due to community outcry, major changes were introduced for the "one punch’ crime. Could I be cynical and say it was males who were affected – yes I will be cynical. We just hope a woman in Kempsey doesn’t die before something is done. Am I pissed off -YES.

Womens refuges need to be strengthened, not closed down.

I believe that women-only refuges run by women are a critical part of the response to domestic violence, please reinstate them ASAP.

Such a great announcement and we all want to see the violence prevented – but meanwhile, women and children need somewhere to go …..

Eliminating violence against women will take along time.

women’s refuges with wrap around services and transional accommodation are vital for saving women’s lives.

Yes they cost more than prevention and community education and hotlines but commonwealth and state govts must fund them.

Cost for 5 yrs $1.982m – see full proposal on WEL website

WEL and several other women’s organisations are lobbying

These women and children are not homeless. Their homes have become dangerous because of domestic violence, so they need a safe place where they can recover their lives.

It is ludicrous not to fund refuges: the most important way to save women and children from violence
