Women’s refuges save lives - spread the word!

Women’s refuges save lives. We request that the Prime Minister act swiftly to agree to a long-term secure separate national funding program for women’s refuges to ensure women and children escaping family and domestic violence have a safe haven and access to specialist services to enable them to rebuild their lives.

We stayed with Mum in women’s refuges at least twice in the 80’s. She was hiding from her abusive partner. Saved our lives. Always grateful we had somewhere to go.

This response is crucial in light of this country’s ongoing crisis re domestic violence. Current provisions are clearly failing women with deadly consequences. Immediate action and adequate funding is urgently needed to address this blight on our nation.

My mother in law has worked in this area for over 20+ years and recently lost her job as coordinator. I’ve seen first hand how important women & children’s refuges are!! I can’t believe the government could have let the closure and minimisation of places go ahead and now they want to come out with all these adds and whatever else if they hadn’t closed refuges there would be no need for all of this ..

    Women need these.

Staying at home getting beaten shouldn’t be forced on someone, they need somewhere to go.

This is a well thought out proposal. It will save State and Federal governments expenditure on emergency health, police and court costs that could have been prevented by having an effective system in place staffed by specialists.

I was pregnant with my second child when I left: but I could have never left my DV relationship without the professional help and incredible support from a woman’s refuge! Seeing it closing down and become a homeless shelter broke my heart, all my ongoing support was taken away, I was left alone to struggle through the world of intimidating court and ongoing abuse and harassment from the ex partner… Please help others who need the help too!!!

This should happen right now. Take the refuges out of NGO control and make the Government responsible for the action. This needs to happen quickly and not be talked about for 12 months with studies or whatever done.
