Women’s refuges save lives. We request that the Prime Minister act swiftly to agree to a long-term secure separate national funding program for women’s refuges to ensure women and children escaping family and domestic violence have a safe haven and access to specialist services to enable them to rebuild their lives.

    Having done the first evaluation of the national supported accommodation assistance program I completely endorse the need for specialist women’s refuges. These women are not homeless. They do not belong in generalist services. They need a safe environment where they can get support to leave a violent relationship.

    It seemed as though we had gone back to the bad old days, when there were no women’s refuges…cutting out funding for Refuges just as the need for them picked up publicity and was receiving public attention at long last. The number of women and children killed by partners seems to be getting worse. Rosy Batty has led the way this time…what guts that woman has!

    Women’s refuges in NSW should never have been closed. This government should be ashamed of its actions in doing this. So much great ‘corporate knowledge’ has been lost & so many caring women have lost their jobs.
